4G Cat M1 and Narrowband IoT relationships
In the process of cellular IoT 2G/3G decommissioning migration, the original 2G/3G connection can only be undertaken by NB-IoT and 4G.
Among them, scenarios with low frequency, small packets, low mobility, and low latency sensitivity but high-cost sensitivity can be undertaken by NB-IoT.
Scenes with medium rate, certain requirements for latency and mobility, voice support and certain cost tolerance can be undertaken by Cat 1.
Due to the long life cycle of IoT devices, users may consider not adopting 2G/3G connectivity when making decisions under the risk of 2G/3G decommissioning. The NB-IoT industry ecosystem is now ready, and if Cat 1 can make a push now, it is indeed a better opportunity to promote inter-generational migration of cellular IoT.
New low- and medium-rate terminals will be connected via Cat 1, and a significant portion of the existing low- and medium-rate 2G/3G terminals will have reached the end of their life cycle by 2025 and can be replaced with Cat 1, thus migrating some of the 2G/3G connections to 4G.
Since Cat 1 is part of the 4G series, it can directly reuse existing 4G resources. In the current context, with the mature 4G industry chain, the Cat 1, as a low-cost version of 4G, only needs to make small tailoring changes to existing 4G products, and it is possible to quickly bring it to the market and reduce costs to the range expected by the industry.
