4G LTE Cat and NB-IoT relationships
The NB-IoT industry ecosystem is now ready, and if Cat 1 can make a push now, it is indeed a better opportunity to drive cellular IoT intergenerational migration.
While 5G is getting a lot of attention, 4G will still have the largest share until 2025. For the IoT, 4G will not only assume a large share of cellular IoT connections in the coming years, but it will also be a major source of cellular IoT revenue for operators.
However, there are also distinct structural features in 4G IoT connectivity, of which LTE Cat 1 is a noteworthy branch. From the current trend of cellular IoT development, the time has opened for LTE Cat 1 to assume the main role of 4G IoT connectivity.
60% of IoT connections need to be served by narrowband networks, while low to medium-rate IoT devices need to be served by Cat 1 or eMTC networks, and only about 10% of high-speed services need to be served by 4G Cat 4 or above or 5G eMBB.
The development of cellular IoT is also largely influenced by the generational upgrade of mobile networks, opening the way for inter-generational migration of connectivity.
In the coming years, the number of cellular IoT connections will experience a migration from 2G+4G-based to NB-IoT+4G-based.
