What is LTE CQI?
CQI = Channel Quality Indicator; Channel Quality Indicator;
CQI is used to reflect the channel quality of the downlink PDSCH. The channel quality of PDSCH is indicated by 0~15. 0 means the worst channel quality and 15 means the best channel quality.
The UE sends CQI to the eNB on the PUCCH/PUSCH. eNB gets this CQI value, and the quality of the current PDSCH radio channel is good. In this way, the PDSCH can be scheduled according to the basis.
In other words, what is the basis for the downlink adaptive coding modulation (AMC) in LTE? One of the bases is CQI.
In more general terms: if the channel quality is good, then the eNB will send more data; if the channel quality is bad, then it will be safer and send less data.
CQI (Channel Quality Indication) reports are an important factor in LTE and have a significant impact on system performance. There are two types of CQI reports in LTE: periodic and acyclic.
The periodic CQI report is carried out by the PUCCH. However, if the UE needs to send the UL data in the same subframe, the periodic CQI report will be transmitted using the PUSCH, together with the UL data.
This is because the UE cannot send both PUCCH and PUSCH at the same time. In this case, the periodic PUCCH resource will be idle.
The reporting granularity is relatively coarse due to the “always-on” signaling overhead associated with periodic CQI reporting. To obtain more detailed CQI reports, the eNB can trigger occasional CQI reports when needed.
Non-periodic CQI reports are sent on the PUSCH, together with UL data or alone.
The granularity of CQI reports can be divided into three levels: broadband, UE-selected subbands, and higher-level configured subbands.
The wideband report provides a CQI value for the entire downlink system bandwidth.
The selected subband CQI report, where the UE divides the system bandwidth into multiple subbands, selects a set of preferred subbands (the best M subbands) and then reports the broadband and a differential CQI value to set a CQI value (assuming the transmission can only pass through the selected M subbands).
The high-level configuration of subband reporting provides the highest granularity. It divides the entire system bandwidth into multiple subbands and then reports a wideband CQI value and multiple differential CQI values, one for each subband.
