What types of countermeasures are available for anti-UAV systems?

Foreign Anti-UAV technologies are broadly in the categories of signal jamming, radar detection, laser cannon shootdown, and integrated-type technologies.

China’s current research and application of countermeasures include GPS spoofing, hardware-implanted GPS spoofing, control signal jamming and hijacking, acoustic interference, thermal weapons or laser cannons, etc. For each countermeasure, the method has its advantages and disadvantages and application scenarios.

1. Physical capture

At present, domestic and foreign common physical capture is mainly divided into two categories, one is the use of larger UAVs against small UAVs.

This confrontation can be used in the form of a larger UAV fire or high-pressure pneumatic jet capture net in the flight process to capture and transfer small UAVs to a safe area but also the use of larger UAVs towing a larger cross-sectional area (5-10 square meters) of flat type capture net in the form of a flat capture net with a larger cross-sectional area (5-10 m2) that “sticks” to the target UAV during flight.

The advantages of this type of physical capture method are lower economic costs, better safety performance, and less damage to the captured UAV, which does not affect the normal use of the captured target, but its disadvantage is that the flight parameters of the larger UAV, stability and the pilot’s flight skills are high, and the success rate in practice is not high.

Another type of physical capture method is through the artificially domesticated eagle, falcon, and other large raptors in the flight process to directly implement control of small UAVs, such methods are low-cost, but the training is difficult and long period.

2. UAV confrontation

Drone confrontation is the most direct countermeasure to self-inflicted direct interception or impact on the target drone, the target drone will be wounded or destroyed to make it land, the use of this method of scenario is in other ways inconvenient or can not use the premise of the choice of an emergency measure, generally only insight to operate the implementation to exclude the more urgent danger.

The use of confrontation methods requires operators to have better skills and choose the right airspace to prevent harm to ground personnel and facilities, while this method is less effective in dealing with multiple drones that need to be confronted.
