Description

What is an Antenna 169 MHz?

The Antenna 169 MHz ISM Frequency Band CTRF-ANTENNA-AP-0169-13200-SMA Antenna is an ISM Frequency Band antenna 169 MHz antenna 3dBi gain SMA male connector antenna 169 MHz Omnidirectional rubber duck antenna manufactured by C&T RF Antennas Inc for indoor-outdoor ISM & LoRa applications, etc.

What is the ISM band and what does it do?

The ISM (Industrial, Scientific, Medical) bands are designated radio frequency bands as defined by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Radio Regulations. These are bands that have been set aside for RF uses other than telecommunications.

Therefore, while the ISM bands can theoretically be used for telecommunications purposes, telecommunications equipment using the ISM bands must be able to withstand interference from other RF and microwave technologies, such as interference from microwave ovens, RF heating, and other devices that may generate electromagnetic interference (EMI).

Although the International Telecommunication Union has identified designated frequency bands, the ISM bands are not uniformly specified by individual countries.

The ISM band was not originally intended for communications, but many short-range, low-power, license-free (or license-tolerant) communications systems now operate in this band.

In addition to communications, the most common uses of the ISM band are induction heating for industrial and domestic use, microwave heating for industrial and domestic use, and RF and microwave heating for medical use such as radiotherapy, hyperthermia, and RF/microwave ablation.

In addition, some recently developed radar systems also use the ISM band, particularly the 2.4GHz ISM band, due to the ready availability of the ISM band and the existence of some low-cost wireless integrated circuits for frequencies under this band.

The most common everyday uses of the ISM band are for low-power and short-range communications such as WiFi, Bluetooth, Zigbee, wireless telephony, RFID, and NFC.

Many people in the US are familiar with the ISM band as it is used by most WiFi and Bluetooth communications and more recently by the increasingly popular 5GHz WiFi systems.

There are also many popular RFID and NFC systems that use the 13.56MHz frequency in the 13.553MHz ~ 13.567MHz ISM band, and there are many credit cards, secure access, person identification, and wireless payment systems that also use this technology.

In addition, many of the latest smart home electronics and enthusiast electronics use Zigbee technology operating in the 915MHz and 2.4 GHz ISM bands to enable low power and short-range communication between devices.

In the coming years, 60 GHz WiFi (i.e. WiGig, also known as IEEE 802.11ad) running in the 60 GHz ISM band is likely to gain popularity due to its very high throughput capability for inter-device communication.

The technology is used for example for HD, 4k video streaming, and extremely fast wireless data transfer between devices.

In recent years, there have been many more modulation schemes and communication platforms for the ISM band than in the past. Some of the reasons for this may be the growing potential for the Internet of Things (IoT) and Industry 4.0 applications, which may employ low-power and short-range machine-like communications without direct user involvement.

These new technologies include, for example, Thread, Z-wave, LoRa, and NB-IoT (Narrowband IoT). While the ISM band may also be used for satellite communications in the future, there are currently no CubeSat, nanoSAT, or other small satellites using the ISM band.
