LoRa wireless sensor networks
In LoRa wireless sensor network designs, often the majority of the wireless transceiver nodes require low-power processing. The only way to reduce power consumption is by reducing the amount of useless operating time.
In most IoT applications, the RF part is in the receiving state most of the time when communicating wirelessly and is where the main energy consumption is.
The amount of data in the entire wireless network is low, but the nodes have to be ready to receive data at all times. Ideally, the node would be in the receiving state when there is data to be received and in the sleep state when there is no information to be received, which requires wake-up-on-air technology.
On-air wake-up looks like the transmitter waking up the receiver from sleep, but it is not. In fact, the receiver automatically wakes up periodically to see if there is a call signal in the air, and if not, it continues to sleep.
If there is, it is awakened to a receiving state. As a result, the average power consumption of the receiver is lower when there is no call signal over the air.
But how to spot a call signal is traditionally judged by setting an RSSI threshold, and only if the signal strength is sufficient is the node considered valid and woken up, otherwise the opposite.
With the application of spread spectrum modulation techniques, one is faced with the challenge of determining whether a signal that may be below the receiver floor noise is already using the channel.
The use of RSSI is certainly not feasible in this case. To solve this problem, a channel activity detector can be used to detect other LoRa signals.
