ADS-B vs primary and secondary radars

Primary radar is an independent, non-cooperative surveillance system in which the primary radar can acquire surveillance information about the target autonomously without any associated equipment being installed on the monitored target.

Although the information acquired by primary radar has limitations for ATS applications, in a sense primary radar surveillance systems are more stable and reliable.

Secondary radar is an independent, cooperative surveillance system (except for barometric altimeters).

The secondary radar calculates the distance and azimuth of the target through the ground interrogation system based on the interrogation and the response of the onboard equipment.

S-mode secondary radar enhances aircraft addressing and two-way data link capabilities.

Secondary radar can provide more detailed information than primary radar, but secondary radar cannot monitor aircraft without transponders installed or with transponders disabled.

ADS-B is a correlated, cooperative surveillance system. Similar to secondary radar, this system requires the installation of appropriate airborne equipment on the aircraft.

In addition to position information, ADS-B provides information such as speed and heading. Unlike radar systems, ADS-B information is obtained directly from airborne equipment.

ADS-B vs ADS-C

ADS-C works in a fundamentally different way from ADS-B. ADS-C is based on a point-to-point model of the Aeronautical Telecommunications Network (ATN) data chain channel.

Which requires both the sending and receiving sides of the data to agree on a communication protocol, such as using ACARS (Aircraft Communication Addressing and Reporting System).

ADS-B uses a broadcast scheme, and no separate communication protocol is required between the sending and receiving parties.

Under normal circumstances, ADS-C surveillance is normally initiated by the ground station and the air traffic service (ATS) sends surveillance messages to the aircraft via the ATN communication network, usually satellite communication (SATCOM) or VHF.

After receiving the message, the onboard equipment sends the aircraft’s position information to the ATS via the ATN data chain according to the communication protocol agreed between the ATS and the aircraft.

The ATS receives the information replied by the aircraft and displays it on the surveillance equipment, thus achieving the purpose of monitoring air traffic.

 

ADS-C is generally used in areas without surveillance such as ocean and inland remote areas, or in airspace with low air traffic flow. In general, ADS-C takes satellite communication with a communication period of 5 minutes, and 1 minute in emergency situations.
